How to use these

  1. Pick and print. Open any pattern, hit your browser's print button, choose A4 or Letter, no margins. The pattern auto-sizes to fill the page.
  2. Trim the paper to about an inch outside the design. Make small slits around the edges so the paper wraps the pumpkin's curve.
  3. Tape it on. Center the design on the pumpkin face. Press out wrinkles.
  4. Poke the outline with a thumbtack or pin. Close dots, every 4 to 6 mm.
  5. Peel and cut. Remove the paper. Connect the dots with a small carving saw or detail knife. Start from the center; work outward.
  6. Light it. A battery candle lasts longer and won't blacken the lid.

New to carving? The easy patterns (large simple shapes, fewer cuts) are forgiving. Save the haunted house and the spider web for your second or third pumpkin.
