A note about local customs
These hours reflect the common convention in each state, not a legal ordinance. Many cities and HOAs set their own windows: a Cincinnati suburb may run 5:30 to 7:30, the next town over 6:00 to 8:30. When in doubt, your city's website is the authority. If a porch light is on, knock. If it is off, keep walking.
What is "Beggars Night"?
In Iowa, parts of Ohio, and a few other states, trick-or-treating sometimes happens on October 30 instead of October 31, and kids tell a joke for candy. It is a real tradition (the joke part traces to the 1930s) and worth confirming with your city if you are new to the area.
